Mythic Mindset

P R Reddall addresses the clash between modern materialism and traditional esoteric values.

In the very first issue of Man’s World Digest, there was an article by Ernst Jünger, (translation by Martin) entitled ‘Tradition’. In the first paragraph it reads:

The individual does not dwell alone in a physical place, but as a member of a community, for which he has to live and, if necessary, to sacrifice himself… But the individual is bound not only to a higher community in space, but also in an even more significant, though invisible, way in time.

Presently, we face a very difficult situation in which very few of our folk are able to grasp the idea of Tradition, in its deeper esoteric sense, and modern politics is all about economics.

It can be very easy to simply dismiss all those who ‘just don’t get it’ as ‘normies’, but the fact is that ‘normies’ are the majority. This leaves the esoteric Traditionalists as outsiders.

One has to be very careful not to reside in an echo chamber where all interactions are between those with the same viewpoint. This mistake generally plays out online, where it can seem like so many people are on a similar wavelength that some kind of political success is inevitable.

Yet face-to-face interaction with fellow citizens can quickly bring the realisation that very few of them actually understand how the world presently works, very few understand Tradition and very few are interested in anything other than base materialism.

Of course, personal and national economics is important, but what many do not understand is how such practical affairs are underpinned.

If the foundation of a nation’s economics is purely of a material nature, then that nation will be a victim of the lowly wants and needs of the workers in combination with the projected base (unholy or un-whole) attitude from those above.

Yet if the practical affairs of a nation have a mythical ideal attached, the people will prosper not simply in terms of material wealth, but spiritually so, which brings contentment in the present moment, along with purpose and a sense that there is an upward path open to them. They will forge ahead with this ideal in mind.

A ‘Mythic Mindset’ must be developed and spread in our communities. This is meta-political and not tied to political parties. Of course it can be tied to a political party, but currently this is not apparent.

The purpose of my book, Towards Awakening: An Odinic Perspective, was to open the mind of the reader to a mythic way of viewing the world. It can be read by anyone open to the idea of Myth. In the chapter, ‘Mind Shift’, I wrote:

The word ‘Tradition’ refers to something beyond the material; a higher ideal represented in the way a man thinks and indeed acts. This world of Tradition can become manifest in the material realm, yet in the age of pure materialism in which one currently lives, rare are men who understand this doctrine and rarer still are those who live by it.

In this modern age, it appears at first glance that so many of our folk are ignorant of such things as I describe above, but the truth is that the blood memory has not forgotten this ancestral way, and our spirit yearns for a return to the mythic world view.

Indeed, living as most presently do creates depression and poor health.

We reside in the darkest age; the Kali Yuga, yet we are on the up and we can visualise an awakening — awakened folk are growing in number.

Those who have embraced this Mythic Mindset and understand the ideas of Tradition have a huge part to play in awakening others. This is done not simply by quietly reading alone but by taking that deepened knowledge, forming interactions and utilising the power of both words and aesthetics.

Not only must the mind be developed through reading (see my book chapter ‘Den of the Bibliophile’) but also in terms of physicality (chapters ‘Resurrecting the Fyrd’ and ‘Physical Regimen’).

When talking with one’s neighbours, one must radiate this mythic ethos. And this radiating effect will spread according to the laws of Wyrd and Orlog. The cycles of the Yugas continue to turn, and our Myth will reappear as truth.
