Due to the language and culture policies of the Dutch state, the Frisian language and culture had and still have a hard time surviving and thriving. Some of the Dutch also look down on the Frisians. The situation is comparable to the one in neighboring Belgium with the Flemish people (who’s countryside was also very poor, especially in the modern period compared with the industrialized south). Although personally, I wouldn’t equate those struggled with that of the Palestinians.
I use the word oppression quasi sarcastically. But none the less, the Frisians predate the Dutch and have been deprived of their way of living. So the term oppression might seem heavyhanded, there certainly is an acurate element to it.
this is interesting, but is oppression the right expression?
